When someone says that a place sounds like an airplane hangar, it usually means cavernous, booming, unintelligible sound. With a concrete floor and high, steel beam ceilings, normal conversations can get lost and any loudspeaker placement is challenging. A movie premier in 5.1 surround sound just doesn't seem like a good idea. But it was for the over 1000 people attending events at the AirVenture Museum this summer.

The Bose® Noise Reduction Technology Group supported a week of events at the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture Museum as part of the world renowned annual air show at Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Among the events taking place that week were a live, two-way conversation with a Russian cosmonaut, showing a breathtaking documentary film, One Six Right celebrating local airport life and the premier of “ Fly Boys” a major motion picture opening in the USA in late September.

“Flyboys,” the first World War I aviation film in over 40 years, is inspired by the epic, courageous tale of the American young men who would become known as the legendary Lafayette Escadrille. Directed by Academy Award winning director, Tony Bill, “ Fly Boys” was shot entirely on a new, cutting edge Ultra Hi Resolution HD Video format developed by Sony. The plan was to bring their special High Resolution projector to Oshkosh and invite the important people of the Aviation world to experience WWI flying.

After trying to convince them to show the film in any other venue than an airplane hangar, Dave Sebastian, Americas Professional Systems Division, enlisted Dan Van Elzen of Accent Audio Video in nearby Appleton, Wisconsin to design and install a system for this high profile event.

Dan met with the clients on site, performed a meticulous site survey of the hangar, engaged Bose Field Engineer, John Rogers for consultation and then presented his solution with quotation to the client. The Panaray® LT4402 speakers, ControlSpace™ ESP-88 system and amplifiers would make up the core of the solution.  Everything else, from rigging to cabling to programming to working with Sony to deliver a digital 5.1 Surround Sound mix to the ControlSpace ™ system and ultimately to the audience, was completed by Accent Audio Video.

Everybody realized what a challenge it was. For Accent Audio Video, it was their first experience with ControlSpace™ system. Using the optional AES3 digital audio cards, all the routing and signal processing was done in the digital realm. Dan Van Elzen, owner of Accent Audio Video said, “The software was invaluable. We were able to program two complex set ups, and then, easily switch back and forth between 5.1 surround sound and simple speech mode for presentations at the museum. The CC-64 control center, made the switching back and forth a breeze."

The client was floored. The event drew some of the largest names in Aviation. The movie and the director were greeted by a standing ovation. A 15 minute Question and Answer session followed. Not once did someone say, “can you repeat the question?”

Dave Sebastian has heaps of praise for Dan Van Elzen and his crew, “This is a story of a dealer believing in our product, taking a huge personal risk, meticulously planning and then executing that plan, achieving a level of success far beyond anyone's expectations. Bose could not have been better represented.”
